When I tell people I’m a spiritual director, many people have questions.
“What is spiritual direction?”
“Is it like counseling?”
“How does it help?”
“What qualifications do you have to practice it?”
Spiritual Direction is for anyone seeking deeper peace, with God and within themselves. It is a time honored term for seeking out a listening, praying companion. In Spiritual Direction, we talk about faith, life, and the daily challenges of both. We welcome God into the conversation, ask for wisdom and listen for his voice. It’s a safe place to explore doubts, questions and struggles. It’s a place to give voice to thoughts and feelings we may not even be aware of. It’s a place to be heard. Spiritual Direction can help us understand ourselves, give us a clearer image of God’s love, and help us know how to respond to his ongoing invitations.
Though each session varies, most begin with prayer, a time of silence and the reminder that God is in our midst. The rest will be shared conversation about your life, your faith journey, your desires and struggles. I may ask questions, make observations or suggest listening prayer to better hear from God. This ongoing relationship helps to:
– Develop deeper intimacy with God
– Facilitate greater awareness of God’s presence
– Reach beyond the things that hold you back
– Discern God’s direction and will
– Pursue the true self you were created to be
Eugene Peterson had this to say: “Spiritual direction takes place when two people agree to give their full attention to what God is doing in one (or both) of their lives and seek to respond in faith… whether planned or unplanned, three convictions underpin these meetings: (1) God is alway doing something: an active grace is shaping this life into a mature salvation; (2) responding to God is not sheer guesswork: the Christian community has acquired wisdom through the centuries that provides guidance; and (3) each soul is unique: no wisdom can simply be applied without discerning the particulars of this life, this situation.”
My certificate in spiritual direction dates from June of 2014. I trained with Selah, a two-year program under the auspices of LTi, or Leadership Transformations, Inc. My training in Selah has helped me discover how to listen for God’s voice and to better hear the hearts of those he brings across my path.
